Volunteer Opportunities

This is an exciting time in the life of the Chapala Opera Guild!  After a long hiatus, we have now returned to in-person programming.

There will be many opportunities for you to be more actively involved with the Guild in the coming months.  Our board members have identified several current openings for new volunteers.  If you’re interested in any of these opportunities, please contact us at the indicated email addresses.

Are you good with technology and able to set up AV equipment? We have events that require AV support as well as programs that are provided on the Zoom platform. If this fits your skill set, check out the volunteer positions below.

Audio/Visual Support (contact:  [email protected]

Need a volunteer to coordinate with lecturers to identify A/V needs and figure out how to set up equipment to satisfy those needs (this varies with every lecturer and venue).

Physical strength to carry equipment to and from venue.

Must show up 1-2 hours early to events to set up and test equipment.

Ability to connect up and operate equipment: DVD player, projector, amp, computer/phone, speakers.

Zoom Coordinator (contact:  [email protected]

Some of our programs will continue to be held on the Zoom platform.  This volunteer would work with the Education committee in planning Zoom events, provide training and preparation assistance for presenters, and serve as Zoom host for the actual events.

Are you someone who has a good aptitude for details and is comfortable with Excel? You would be the perfect person for our Membership volunteer positions below. We can provide training for our email platform for member communication as well as training on the monthly procedures to keep our membership records in tip top shape. Membership Assistant (contact:  [email protected]

Need a volunteer to learn to send out monthly membership renewal reminders, process membership renewals, prepare monthly/quarterly membership reports, etc.  Must be proficient with Excel and .csv spreadsheets, Word, .pdf files, and gmail.

Event Registration Assistant (contact:  [email protected]

Need a volunteer to learn to check the membership status of registrants, send out confirmations, answer registration questions, etc.

Are you a compelling writer with a sharp eye for detail? Are you someone who can catch things the author missed?  Our communications team is looking for several volunteers from a social media coordinator, to writers, to proofreaders. Read about those opportunities below.

Social Media Coordinator (contact:  [email protected]

The Opera Guild maintains a social media presence on Facebook. The Social Media Coordinator would post event announcements on Facebook, manage paid advertising on the account, and post authorized event photos and videos on the platform.

Must have experience posting on Facebook and be aware of current trends for driving traffic to the Facebook page. An analytical thinker who can create and follow a plan, collect and analyze data, and change direction based on solid data. Monitors and maintains compliance with Facebook policies.

Copy Editors (2) (contact:  [email protected]

Principal responsibility is to edit copy about upcoming Opera Guild events prior to publication to ensure that all pertinent details are included, and the copy meets all of the criteria listed in the Communication's Committee Guidelines for Submission of an Article. Also responsible for editing copy submitted by guest writers and organizations submitting articles for the website.

Must have good written and oral communication skills, proofreading skills, respect for deadlines, and a willingness to be part of a team. Experience as a writer, teacher, or editor preferred, but will consider related background.

Feature Writers (multiple) (contact: [email protected]

Principal responsibility is to draft interesting articles relating to the upcoming Opera season. Also, willing to write articles on assigned topics.

Core competencies include excellent written communication skills, research skills, and respect for deadlines. Experience as a writer for any size publication is a plus. This is a freelance position.

Press Assistant (contact:  [email protected]

Responsible for sending out press releases to local media and posting to calendars of relevant publications. The Press Assistant is a member of the Communications Committee.

Must be detail-oriented and deadline driven. Good oral and written communication skills. Willing to meet with representatives from local media and cultural organizations to increase visibility of the Guild and its events.

Experience is helpful but will train a candidate who matches the competency and skills profile.

Graphic Designer (contact:  [email protected]

A creative individual experienced with graphic design software to work on specific tasks of short duration. Position reports to the Communications chair but will help other committees as needed.

Are you someone who likes to organize events? Meeting new people and taking care of the details for our educational and social events are the hallmark of Point Person positions.  You would be asked to serve for one or two events in a fiscal year. The Education Committee is responsible for all of the educational events offered by the Opera Guild. Committee members decide on the programming that will be offered to our members each year. We are looking for new committee members who would be willing to serve as a point person for one or two events each fiscal year. In addition to a written guide to the process, we have experienced committee members who are ready and willing to help newcomers.

Point persons are responsible for booking  venues, finding speakers, and arranging audio-visual support. Must be present the day of the event to coordinate volunteers and troubleshoot issues that may arise.

Need volunteers to assist at various events.  Help needed for greeting and check-in, room set-up, and other miscellaneous tasks. This can be a one-time commitment and an excellent opportunity for a newcomer.
